Case Summary[edit]
In Vellore Citizens Welfare Forum v. Union of India AIR 1996 SC 2715 , a petition was filed against the pollution caused to river Palar, the primary source of water supply, due to the arrival of toxins by tanneries and other industries in the State of Tamil Nadu. The decision was made in favour of the petitioner. The Court imposed Rs. 10,000 as pollution fine on each tannery and requested Madras High Court to constitute a Special Bench ‘Green Bench’ to deal with the cases related to the environment.
